EMDR therapy is a type of psychological treatment that was originally developed to treat patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, recent studies have shown that EMDR therapy can also be an effective treatment for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). EMDR therapy helps to reprocess memories and experiences that are associated with OCD symptoms. This allows patients to eventually let go of the negative thoughts and feelings that are associated with OCD. EMDR therapy has been found to be especially beneficial for patients who have not responded well to other types of treatment, such as medication or exposure therapy. If you or someone you know is struggling with OCD, EMDR therapy may be worth considering.

What are the Symptoms of OCD?

OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, is a mental health condition that affects approximately 1 in 100 adults. OCD is characterized by obsessions, which are unwanted and intrusive thoughts, images, or urges, that cause anxiety or distress. People with OCD may try to neutralize their obsessions with compulsions, which are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that they feel driven to perform.  OCD can interfere with daily life and cause significant distress.

Symptoms of OCD often begin in adolescence or young adulthood, but can start at any age.  While OCD can manifest in a variety of ways, there are some common symptoms that many people with OCD experience. These include: excessive hand-washing and/or cleaning; repeated checking of door locks, appliances, and other objects; difficulty throwing things away; hoardi ng; obsessive thoughts about violence, germs, or sex; and repetitive body movements such as tapping, blinking, or touching. OCD can be a debilitating disorder, but there are treatments available that can help people manage their symptoms and live productive lives.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy is a type of psychological treatment that is used to help people heal from trauma. The acronym EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR therapy is a structured form of therapy that uses a specific protocol to help people process and heal from trauma. EMDR therapists use a variety of techniques to help people who have experienced trauma, including eye movements, bilateral stimulation, and cognitive processing. This type therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for PTSD and other trauma-related disorders. Through EMDR, therapists work with people to help them identify and process the thoughts, emotions, and memories that are associated with their trauma. EMDR therapy can be an effective treatment for people of all ages who have experienced trauma, as well as other mental health conditions – such as OCD.

Can EMDR Treat OCD?

EMDR therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with OCD – it is becoming a more common form of treatment for the condition as well.  The goal of EMDR therapy is to help the patient to process and integrate traumas that may be causing their OCD symptoms. EMDR therapy uses a variety of techniques to help the patient to reframe their thinking about the traumas and to develop new coping skills.

This kind of therapy helps patients to process and make sense of their obsessions and compulsions, which can help to reduce the frequency and intensity of their symptoms. EMDR therapy is typically conducted over a multitude of sessions, during which the therapist will guide the patient through a series of exercises. These exercises may involve eye movements, sounds, or tapping, which are designed to help the patient process their thoughts and emotions. EMDR therapy can be an effective treatment for patients with OCD, helping them to reduce the symptoms and improve their quality of life.

The Benefits of EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy has several benefits for those who go through the process.  It is oftentimes a great alternative to more traditional therapies, especially when an individual has not found relief from traditional talk therapies.  A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that EMDR was more effective than CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) in reducing OCD symptoms. EMDR was also found to be more effective than CBT in reducing general anxiety and depression symptoms.  Not only that, but EMDR therapy has been shown to be as effective as medication in treating OCD, and it does not have the same side effects as medication.

After completing EMDR therapy, people often feel a sense of relief from their symptoms. However, it is important to remember that EMDR therapy is not a cure for OCD, but it can help reduce the symptoms and allow people to live more normal lives. EMDR therapy can also help people with OCD to learn how to deal with their obsessions and compulsions in a more positive way. EMDR therapy can be an extremely helpful tool for people with OCD, and it can help them to lead happier and healthier lives.

Most people who undergo EMDR therapy report feeling more positive and hopeful about their future. EMDR therapy can be an emotionally challenging experience, but it is often an incredibly healing one as well.
